Some golf courses impress you. Others stay with you. Pasatiempo Golf Club, tucked into the hills of Santa Cruz, California, does both and then some.

I was fortunate enough to play three rounds at Pasatiempo, and by the end of the trip it had firmly earned a spot among the nicest courses I’ve ever played. Not just because of its pedigree or conditioning, but because of how it felt to play.

Designed by Alister MacKenzie, Pasatiempo demands your attention from the very first tee shot. Every hole asks a question. Some are subtle, some are intimidating, and a few feel downright mischievous. It’s a thinking golfer’s course in the best way. Strategy matters, angles matter, and being on the correct side of the fairway can completely change how a hole plays.

Across three rounds, I found myself appreciating different things each time out. First day it was the greens. Fast, firm, and full of movement without ever feeling unfair. Second day it was the bunkering: perfectly placed, visually striking, and always ready to punish a lazy swing. And then there were the moments where a hole looked straightforward on the scorecard but revealed its true character only once you stood over the ball.

What really separates Pasatiempo, though, is its balance. It’s challenging without being exhausting. Penal without being cruel. You can shoot a great score if you’re sharp, but you can also enjoy the round (I did) even when you’re not (I wasn’t). That’s a rare thing.

The setting adds another layer to the experience. The course winds naturally through the landscape, with elevation changes that never feel forced. There’s a timeless quality to the place, like the course has always been there and always will be. It’s easy to imagine generations of golfers walking the same fairways, wrestling with the same decisions, and shaking their heads over the same putts.

By the third round, I wasn’t trying to “figure out” Pasatiempo anymore or making adjustments to my swing mechanics. I was just enjoying it. Enjoying the walk, the variety, the creativity, and the constant reminder of how good golf course design can elevate the entire game.

Some courses you play once and check off a list.

Pasatiempo is a course you think about afterward, and one you immediately want another shot at.
